Mama’s Taco Seasoning Mix

January 30, 2013

Taco Seasoning Mix

I have been using this Taco Seasoning Mix Recipe for many years.  We never buy the packet from the store. This recipe is MSG free and so much healthier for my family.

I have included instructions for making tacos, using this mix, at the bottom of this post. You can also use this mix in other recipes that call for taco seasoning.

Here are some other yummy uses:

Add a tablespoon per one cup of sour cream and made a tasty taco dip that’s great on corn chips, potato chips, and even vegetables.

Sprinkle Taco Seasoning Mix on chicken, beef, or pork before cooking.

Sprinkle on rice or pasta after cooking (to taste).

Ingredients for Taco Seasoning Mix:

1/4 cup dried minced onion

3 tablespoons chili powder

2 tablespoons ground cumin

2 tablespoons sea salt

1 tablespoon crushed cayenne pepper flakes

1 tablespoon dried minced garlic

1 tablespoon cornstarch or arrowroot powder

2 teaspoons crushed oregano

1 1/2 teaspoon sugar

Instructions for Taco Seasoning Mix:

Place all ingredients into a pint-size canning jar and shake well. You can divide this up in six equal parts, about 1/4 cup each, and put in plastic bags for convenience.  I just leave mine in the jar and use 1/4 cup, plus 1/2 cup of water for one pound of ground beef.

Instructions for making Tacos, using this Taco Seasoning Mix Recipe:

Brown one pound of ground beef, drain off excess fat.  Add 1/4 cup Taco Seasoning Mix, plus 1/2 cup of water and mix well. Simmer uncovered for about ten minutes, or until water has evaporated.  Spoon meat mixture into taco shells.  Top with grated cheddar cheese, chopped onions, chopped tomatoes, chopped lettuce, taco sauce, and sour cream.  Makes 8 servings.

Welcome to my homestead!

Hello, I'm Nelle Weaver!
I grew up on a small farm in Ohio and experienced various aspects of homesteading. I learned many skills from my grandparents and parents and from being involved in 4-H and FFA.
