We used to buy instant oatmeal in those little “just-add-boiling-water” or microwaveable packets. Now, we make our own Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal.
I taught my kids how we made oatmeal when I was a kid. They couldn’t believe the difference in the flavor. The stuff in the packets doesn’t come even close. Plus, this recipe is almost as easy to make. It is made with real fruit, real sugar, and nothing artificial. Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal is my favorite breakfast oatmeal recipe.
Tips:
In this recipe, I will use instant oatmeal or baby oats (for the kids), but you can substitute it for old-fashioned rolled oats or oat bran and increase the cooking time, if desired.
This amount serves 4-6 people. You can make half this recipe for two people or a quarter recipe if serving only one person.
You can change the ingredients and flavors in Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal by:
…adding 1/2 cup raisins, or other dried fruit
…adding strawberries or peaches
…replacing apple cider with cream or milk
…removing the cinnamon, if desired.
Ingredients for Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal:
2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and cut into small cubes
2 tablespoons butter
6 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt (Don’t skip this, it actually makes your oatmeal taste sweeter.)
3 cups baby oats or quick oats
2 cups apple cider
2 cups water
Instructions for Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal:
In a medium sauce pan, saute apples in butter over medium heat. Add brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and baby/quick oats, mix until combined. Slowly stir in apple cider and water. Cook and stir until desired thickness is reached. Add a little brown sugar on top for extra sweetness. Serves 4-6.
