Easy Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream

May 28, 2014

Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream in Freezer

I love this Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream Recipe, because it is easy for kids to help make or make on their own.

We have been using this simple recipe for many years.  It’s not the typical custard-style ice cream, cooked on the stove, my parents made in their hand-crank ice cream machine many years ago.  That stuff is delicious and very creamy, but takes a long time to make.

If you are looking for a very easy, yummy Homemade Ice Cream Recipe your kids can help with, you have come to the right place.  Place all the ingredients into a mason jar, have the kids shake to mix, pour the mixture in your ice cream freezer, turn on, and wait.

I have included a 1 quart recipe and a 1 ½ quart recipe, so you can choose, based on the size of your ice cream freezer.

Ingredients for 1 Quart Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream:

2 cups half and half

½ cup pure cane granulated sugar (for a more caramelized flavor, try coconut sugar)

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Dash of sea salt

Instructions for 1 Quart Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream:

Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream in a JarPour all ingredients into a quart jar, replace lid tightly, and shake until sugar is dissolved.

Shaking Ice CreamI have the kids pass the jar around, taking turns shaking it.

Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream in FreezerPour into a 1 quart electric ice cream freezer and allow ice cream to churn and freeze until stiff. This should take about 30-40 minutes, depending on your ice cream freezer.  Enjoy!

Tip: Homemade ice cream is always best when served immediately, or with your favorite homemade toppings. You can also put it in a chilled bowl in the freezer for later, but it won’t be as soft.

Welcome to my homestead!

Hello, I'm Nelle Weaver!

My husband and I write about our simple life here on Mama's Homestead and teach classes on our homestead in central Ohio, where we raise goats, chickens, and rabbits, have an orchard, garden, keep bees, and much more. Read More…
