Homemade Beer Bread

January 29, 2013

beer bread

There is a boxed beer bread I used to buy all the time. It is kind of expensive, but very simple to make. Just add beer, bake, brush with butter, cool and serve.

This beer bread recipe isn’t exactly that easy, but it is very close and way cheaper. Four simple ingredients and you are there. I make this recipe when I need a quick yeast bread that doesn’t take all day to make. My family loves it and it makes my house smell amazing!

You can use your favorite beer, if you have one. I don’t drink beer, so I don’t have a favorite. I use the cheapest beer I can find. For a stronger yeast flavor in your beer bread, use Ale.

 Ingredients for Homemade Beer Bread

3 cups self-rising flour

1/2 cup pure cane granulated sugar

12-ounce bottle of dark beer

2 tablespoons butter, melted

Plus, enough butter to butter the pan

Instructions for Homemade Beer Bread

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and beer; mix well. The batter will be very gooey.

Pour into a buttered 9″ x 5″ loaf pan or a buttered well seasoned 10-inch iron skillet and bake at 375 degrees for 50 minutes. Remove from oven and brush with melted butter.  Return to oven; bake three more minutes.  Cool on cooling rack and enjoy.

Tips for Homemade Beer Bread

This bread great for sandwiches.

Use leftovers the next day to make toast to have with eggs or top with butter, sugar, and cinnamon, yum!

…or make French Toast for breakfast.

Dry in a dehydrator and crumble or grind in a food processor to make delicious bread crumbs to use in recipes, like this one.

It can also be made in a nine-inch iron skillet.

Welcome to my homestead!

Hello, I'm Nelle Weaver!
I grew up on a small farm in Ohio and experienced various aspects of homesteading. I learned many skills from my grandparents and parents and from being involved in 4-H and FFA.
My husband and I write about our simple life here on Mama's Homestead and teach classes on our homestead in central Ohio, where we raise goats, chickens, and rabbits, have an orchard, garden, keep bees, and much more. Read More…
